Hello All;
I am looking to get a new 6' Bush Hog brand Brush hog model 286. Do any of y'all have experience with them? are they worth the money? I will use it behind a 4000 Diesel. Thanks in advance;
George

George,

I have a Bush Hog brand cutter "The Squealer". It is a lighter and cheaper one than the 286 but it is a piece of junk.

It cuts ok but it has always had a bad vibration. The first one I got was so bad you couldn't stay on the tractor. Bush Hog said the center hole in the stumpjumper was drilled off center and sent me another one.

It is a little better but eats shear bolts like candy. Finally had to drill out the flange to put bigger bolts. Voided warranty I'm sure but I don't care. Couldn't use it like it was to mow heavy johnson grass. I will never buy another Bush Hog brand piece of equipment again.

Rhino or Woods would be my choices.

JT

Hello Robert and JT;
The model 286 comes with a slip clutch so shear bolts should not be a problem. The 286 is for 2" brush/saplings and the best price I can get around here (actually up north in Hattiesburg)is $1775.00 plus [$296.00 for safety chain option installed]. What is the going price of a Woods (comparable model)?
Thanks;
George

I'm not a woods dealer, just an owner, so i can't help you with a price quote. I think if you go to a Woods dealer you will find the Woods cutters to be competitive in price, and personally i'd pay more for a Woods "Brush Bull" just to get the superior features it offers. Robert

Sorry George, I haven't priced the Woods brand - Looks like I'm gonna have to keep the Bush Hog. The one that I have was only $750. so it is not a fair comparison to the 286 that you are looking at. I agree too that the slip clutch is far better than the shear bolts, even though I have had others with shear bolts that I haven't had a problem with.

My next door neighbor has a Rhino - don't know what he paid for it but that is one tough hunk of steel. I think he bought it at Davis Tractor in Meridian, MS. Good luck with whatever you get.

The Bush Hog rotary cutter i had, the deck cracked up pretty bad. Yes, i used it to cut heavy brush and heavy grass. I switched to a Woods brand, and i like it a lot better. (i now have two Woods cutters) The deck has held up much better, and when i want to take the blades off, it's no longer such a big deal like it was on my Bush Hog!! I NEVER have to fight to get the blades off my Woods, and it doesn't take a HUGE socket to get the job done either.
NO brand rotary cutter will replace a lawn mower, it's not what they were designed to be used for. For mowing lawns with a tractor, get a REAR DISCHARGE 3 point mower.
My next Rotary cutter is going to be a Woods "Brush Bull". It looks like the best designed cutter now out there.

Bush Hog is one of the better manufacturers of mowers. I can't see where you would go wrong getting one of theirs. I've heard they are a little more expensive than some other brands but everyone I know who owns one says they are worth it. I bought a new 6' mower this past spring. Got a Rhino since that's what the dealer handled other than Deere. If he had handled Bush Hog rather than Rhino, I wouldn't have given it a second thought.
Good luck.

I mow 2.5 acres of lawn and all except up close to the house with a 6' rotary and then do around trees and walks with a push mower.

If you don't tell anybody you're using a hog they won't know the difference if you keep it raised just enough so the sides don't scrub down and mark the ground

Bogs,

I have a Bush Hog 6 ft finish mower with rear discharge. It does as good a job as my 42 in. Cub Cadet. I don't think you will ever get a nice cut on a lawn with a rotary cutter. It is to be expected that two very different jobs require different tools.

BOGS I mow a large field and sum heavy brush and it dues good but my blades have about a 1/2 to 5/8 radius for a cutting edge and I have never used it with any descent sharp blades I plan on sharpening them this winter sow I cant really help you out with this question but all of the people around here use a yard tractor or a large mower to mow there yards and they have bush hogs in the barn
