agree on with others on back rubs but..if you're in it for the business. the flies will lessen the weight gain of the cow and sometimes cause infection of the eyes. anything that keeps a cow from eating or adds stress (like tail swishing and neck twisting will hurt gains. so if problem is really bad, use a spray to knock the flies out and use the backrub to keep them down. remember if a cow can get into it, it will get into it sooner or later. put back rubs up with single strands of heavy duty rope or better, single strands of chain. we had our bull get his hind ankle caught in a loop of rope used to hold the backrub. cut off circulation to foot, only solution was a 45 to the head.

I wouldnt really worry about the flies, when the temp drops the flies will be gone, what do u think happens to the cows that are left on pasture all summer with no dust or cattle rubs. u can buy a cattle rub at TSC or Farm and Country to put up. What i use is a spray that is called permethrin or permectrin, u can mix the spray up with water and in a garden sprayer and this works fine u wont have to get close to the animals at all. 1 bottle of this spray will last for about 10 sprayings u should only spray about 1 or 2 times a month no more. Hope this helps. this is what i use for my 75 head of cattle during the summer. BTW the spray controls face flies, horn flies, lice, ticks, fleas ect on the cattle.

Hi Bowd,
When we had cattle we would hang a chain between the gate posts where the cows passed. The chain would be high enough for the cows to go under, but it would drag across their backs as they passed. We wrapped burlap sacks all around the chain and tied them. Then we soaked the sacks with Gulf Livestock Spray. This was actually a liquid concentrate purchased by the gallon. Every week or so during the summer we would add more spray(liquid concentrate) to the burlap. If you have fencing with a gate or narrow passage, you might try this. Farm stores have some type of fly spray.

The flies won't hurt the cattle but if you really want to get rid of them, you can use some sevin dust or dairy dust. Since it is late November, most of the country will send the flies south now anyway. A farm and home store should be able to set you up. The hard part is getting close enough to treat the cattle. Take an old mayonaisse jar and poke holes in the lid to shake the dust with. Stay upwind. If these are show cattle, you can buy the fly spray for horses and wipe it on. I hate using pesticides on cattle that are getting close to go to market.
