Been trying to smooth out a few rough areas on my property with a 5' box blade. Thing haven't gone as smooth as I had hoped and I'm curious:

Is it acceptable (and safe) to replace the top link with a hydraulic cylinder so I don't have to get off the tractor to change the blade angle?

Can I add weight on top of the box blade to help keep it from jumping over some of the humps I'm trying to smooth out?

Have a 72 JD 1520 w/ 2 remotes.

Thanks for your help.

Bryant

It's called a Gannon Kit,Gives you tilt and top link control. Been grading with hydrolics for years. you don't need weight when you can adjust hydrolicly

I've used hydraulic top links for years, first on a Farmall 340 and now on a Kubota 2950. Made 'em myself. Bought a two way cylinder, cut the ends off and welded on a 3 point ball joint that I bought at TSC.

It works great, especially with a back blade. You can stand the blade up and dig with it or tilt it forward and drag or smooth loose material.

There is a company that markets a hydralic cylinder top link. Don't have any idea what company it was but have seen there ad. I think it was probably a stardard hydraulic cylinder that had the ends replaced so they were the same as a standard top link. It would need to be a double acting cylinder, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

As far as adding weight, you can add how ever much you want, but the more you add, the more likely you are to tear something up. I'm not familiar with your tractor, but if it has a draft control make sure it is set to its stiffest setting.

Hope this helps,
Matt

TISCO has hyd. top links. They don't sell to customers directly but your tractor dealers can order for you.

Matt - Thanks for your response. You brought up a point I forgot to mention. The tractor does have a selector lever for draft (D) control or load (L) control or you can set it in between at L/D (supposed to be a combination of both). I played with the different settings and couldn't tell that it made any difference in keeping the blade down.
