I have aquired an old Tulsa Winch that I would like to mount on a 3-point frame. This is a large capacity 20,000 lb worm-gear winch capable of holding over 200 ft. of 1/2 in. cable. It was used on a heavy tow truck and sprocket drive off what I assume was a truck pto. It currently has a #60 chain sprocket (30 teeth) welded on the input shaft. The winch is 30 to 1 ratio. For the installation I am contemplating, a hydraulic drive motor would be preferred over running a pto shaft. However, I know nothing about hydraulic motors. My tractor has a 19 gpm output at the rear ports. What size motor would turn this winch and should it be geared down from the 30 tooth sprocket now on the winch or should it be direct-drive to the input shaft? What would keep the winch from back-lashing the hydraulic motor under tension?

Also try Baum bearing company 800 228 9222. their catalogue has motor and pump sizing calculations. you should have a catalogue anyway lots of stuff in it. they are good people too.

Moose,I'd call Surplus Center in Lincoln, NE at 1 800 488 3407 and tell them what you are about to do. They are BIG into hydraulics and answered all my questions on log splitters when I was building them in the '80s. Good people! Jim
