I have a chance to pick up a JD 290 two row corn planter - want one for small food plots for deer. Is this a good-enough planter? What should I look for in terms of condition? Can parts be found? Any other thoughts appreciated.

I use a 290, I believe its a late 1940's. I have 5 different plates that I match to corn seeds. Mine has the check wire equipment, but I have never used this, as its more man hour intensive. This planter has been reliable, and I've only had to fix one flat tire in the 10 years I've owned it.

Parts should be plentiful as already mentioned. John Deere made these planters up until around 1970. They are a excellent little planter.

It has been argued that the 290 was THE BEST pull-type 2-row of any time. I know guys around here who'd kill for one to plant sweet corn . . . .

Here in Ohio 290's bring a premimum if you ask me. Last Febuary at a consignment sale a 290 that was in good shape-but not excellent shape brought $350. Other times $200-$400 range. Mostly for Sweet Corn plots is why they are selling like they are. I would like to find one that needs some work and restore it. Ford 309 2-row 3 pt. planters also are a good planter and still bring pretty good money.
If you have a tractor that will pull it, consider a 4-row. I bought my JD 494 4-row in good shape for $25 last year at a auction. A little newer 1240 in G.C. brought $100 that day. Good Luck.

we had an A-C snap coupler planter, looked good but planted crappy. could never understand why. it was too rigid or something. our old IH planters were all beat up but planted better. i heard 290's were great, wish i had one to plant my sweet corn.
sold my A-C planter to a collector.

I also had a snap-coupler 2-row planter that planted with. It also planted crappy, the old steel press wheels just didn't cover the seed properly. Plus I didn't have the manual at the time and later relized it had the "hill-drop" attachments still on! I carefully made the planter into a 3 pt. deal(didn't have a AC tractor) so I could use it. So I completely took it apart, new paint and decals. Took it to a auction where a AC collector who works with my neighbor bought it for $190. I was nice enough to give him the original hitch parts, so he could switch it back.
