I have a hobby farm and use a couple of 720D,s for tractors. I would like to find a fold-up disc that would make it down a 12 ft wide trail and then open up to about 14 ft for use. I know that JD made discs of this type, but they are not common around here. What model am I looking for? Were they good discs? How much disc will a 720 handle? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

I would also take a look at the ATHENS off-set disk. They are well built and have good weight to them. We used a 10 foot model on 60 acres that hadn't been touched for over 20 years. The ATHENS made short work of that sod.

Look for an IH #37 or #370 disc. We have a 14 foot 37 and a 12 foot 370. They are made stronger than the John Deeres. They both are easy to adjust and they pull well and they do a good job.

Gentleman, Unless you are just 'BENT' on owning
a JD or IH I would look for a Krause or Miller
they are typically heavier built . When you look at the Primary tillage models. Many 12 & 14 ft.
were used in the panhandles of TX & OK through
the 60's and 70's . Mostly Offsets not a lot
of Tandems. I prefer the offset for a couple
of reasons , Besides plowing a field in throughs,
one can plow in a Land fasion. Also a grain drill
can be pulled with a offset to plow/plant in one
trip. Back to the ?--- A 720 should be able to handle a 12 or 14 ft model. I also agree with
Central PA lose the folding disk idea, If your
tractor has 180+ hp then a folding disk is a good deal, unless it is just for the novelty of it.

I used a 15foot JD BWA disk behind a 720D , and had great luck with it, I would look for a 12 foot or so version of that style disk. I also had an IH 37 disk, and that thing was a joke. Wouldn't pull straight, and it was so light I had to chain tractor weights to it.

If I was you I would forget the fold down 14 footer, and just go with a 12, I think you'll be farther ahead as you can pull it a gear faster and also have less disk to pull through heavy spots.

I would look at an IH disk first, before a Deere disk, I think the IH's are built better, we got a 12 foot IH #37 disk and really like it. I would try to find a 37, and also most parts are still available too.

Thanks for the comments. The reason I'm looking for a folding disc is so I can go slower in my rocky feilds and still get something done. I have a ford 10 ft that I got cheap. It was in fairly good shape when I got it. I figured I could just go faster, which I can, but I have almost destroyed the disc hitting rocks. I go slower now but then it takes so long. I prefer to disc a couple of times because the field cult. digs up so many rocks and then you have to pick them. I'll keep looking. Didn't International make a smaller folding style disc at one time? I remember seeing one one time that was not a John Deere but I'm not sure what brand it was.

Yep, I have heard about small fold up IH's at one time, although I have never seen one. I can understand why you would want a fold up job, we got alot of rocks here, too. The extra weight and size would help matters.

You say that an IH #37 disc is a good one? I had one, and was GLAD to replace it with a 14' JD RWA. That #37 would NEVER do a good job, and we tried everything. Also, it wouldn't trail behind the tractor at transport speed, if the tractor was going faster than 6mph. Wobbled and weaved ALL OVER the road. Of course it came to us w/o a manual, but I didn't much like it. I DO like the RWA.

Never had a problem with it weaving all over the road. Our land is really rocky and I haven't been able to break anything yet, although I don't try! I really like it, even better than my neighbors IH 490!

pulled both a JD and a IHC 37 12 footers the IH was easier to adjust and worked better. With the JD when done discing fields looked like the ocean at high tide. never had this with IH. Pulled both with 400 IH in 3rd high so 720 should have no problem.
