Hi Pete,
The chain from the sprocket on the axle housing powered both the seed hopper and the fertilizer distributor. The seed hopper and the fertilizer distributor both sat on the driver's side of the tractor and the large link chain threaded through the idler pully and the gears on both the hopper and distributor. If I recall, when you raised the planter that was mounted underneath the tractor, a lever disengaged the gear which allowed the hopper and the distributor to stop turning. I had the complete set up mounted on my tractor at one time, but it was not worth the effort to mount it for the small garden I plant each year.
