i made a smaller one for my cub. i used the front and rear from a v.w.bug. also used the a-frame front from a mobile home for the bed rails. my buddy has his own mill, so a case of beer later i drove away with all the rough cut lumber i could haul. it made a nice deck. maybe about 12 feet long and 8 ft. wide. has just enough flex for the hills and small holes and ditches. i might have about $30 in it, plus my time

Chris:

Most everyone around here has 3-5. Two main styles: one for general use and hay, one if you are mainly in tobacco. I support my farming habbit by teaching ag mechanics. We build a lot of flats for people. Couple of designs I really like and a couple more I do if people just like the style. Email me if you want some specifcs. We ususally build 16'-20' on white oak or up to 26' on steel. I retail 20' wagons for $400 each mounted on your running gear wood tail gates,+ $50 for detachable pipe. Cost is about $265 each.

I have spent more building things myself than it would cost to buy new, but what I built is a hellava lot better than can be bought. Plus it's fun. Keith

Hi, I built a 9 ft wide by 16 ft long hay wagon. I used a 6 ton korry farm running gear with two 3x8x16 beams. I used 4x4 cross way on top of the beams. I made my side only about 6.5 ft so I could get in and out of my tobacco barns . I used all rough cut oak. Rough cut oak makes a better floor over treated wood because it will give you some traction if you walk on it. I use a JD thower and a person to stack so these dimentions allow me to stack 5 rows accross and 5 deep. Bill

made a hay wagon for $50 and a 1/4 load of fire-wood. swappped the neighbour for a toyota 2wd truck, didn't runn thats for the wood. The $50 is for steel and the deck, we had a custom sawmill op, at the farm at the time cutting lumber for the shop, best 2"x8"x 14' ive seen ever.

Started by stripping the truck to the frame, building up some steel beams off the frame, rigged up the front end to steer from a long tow/tongue, put the wood deck down. Holds 2 tons of hay no problem.

use ur imagination and have fun with it.

yeah, i've done it. the first, i used a truck rearend for the rear wagon axle. welded kingpost to the truck front spindles and made a front wagon axle for them to fit in. used the orginal tierods for ackranman steering. the second i built using spindles from Shoup. i saved a little money if you don't count my labor. allow for twist when building the platform. before one of the accountant types gives me a lecture, i like to build, i'm gonna build, and if i want it to be, what i build is better that what i can purchase. Fabricating and machining was my business before i did what i do now. now its one of my hobbies.

Glad to read posts from someone in the same kinda bidness I'm in. I also like building stuff sometimes, even though it doesn't make much sense to some folks. After having a machine shop, along with cutting and welding equipment, I'd hate to mess wid ol tractors without the benefit if same. Stan
