Considering the possibility of buying a tow-behind rotary mower for my ATV, to establish and maintain paths in my woodlot where it's too rough for the tractor.

Any input on brands, sources, prices or other comments would be appreciated.

I've been looking at the same thing, got a lot of hillside pasture that's to steep for a 2wd tractor and I'm not near crazy enough to get on with a 4wd. Go to www.cyclecountry.com . They've got several diferent finish mowers, including a front mount...real nifty. They've also got a rough cut model, seems like a decent mower. Also might want to check www.northerntool.com , they use to carry several different ones. But I will say that I've always liked Bushhog products, and as a general rule of thumb, you'll not go wrong buying one of their products, or at least I think so. Hope this helps.

Casey

I have a Mott High Speed flail mower I use for similar work. It cuts a 48 inch swath and is powered by an 18 HP 2 cylinder Wisconsin engine . The cutting height is crank-adjusted. It will mow anything from a lawn to a hayfield. I see them for sale now and then. If you could find one it would do the job for you. I'll see if I have a picture I can e-mail. John

I have a 4' cut pull-behind with an 8hp Briggs, manufactured by Haban. Works very well, have been happy with it. Use it behind a JD 140 hydrostatic drive tractor, with it's own 46" deck - pulled off side, it gives me almost an 8' cut. Used this rig to cut 68 acres of rough hayland twice, as well as much mowing around here, and at my church. Is a bit tricky handling in close quarters, but you'll learn. Haban doesn't exist, but an exact copy is being made by AG-Fab, sold by Quality stores. Cost isn't cheap, around $800, but I think it is well worth the money.

How rugged is that machine? I'm looking for something to cut heavy, thick growth of small bushes (we call 'em hardtack bushes). Individual stems are maybe 1/4 or 3/8ths thick, but they grow in clumps of 30 or 40 stems and are a cast-iron bugger to cut. I've chainsawed anything bigger out of the main paths, but this stuff keeps coming back.

I'd be tempted to try one of them if I thought it'd stand up to the punishment. The full-blown bush hog types are running either side of $2000 from what I can see, which is too rich for my blood.

It uses two 24" mower blades, but they seem to be pretty heavy duty - they even keep their edge very well. I've cut through all kinds of light brush in those hayfields. Have hit quite a few rocks too! No problems yet, other than that I've worn out a drive belt!

But Mom won't let me have one, I can't afford to hire one, and I don't want paths that wide anyway. Just walking trails, 3-4' wide.

Have you considered the walk behind brush hog cutters like by D R Country Home Products. Mine is easier to handle where turns and paths are tight and safe where I can't get the tractor to.

That's what brought the subject up. Wife saw one on TV and sez "That'd be just the ticket for the woodlot"

I'm thinking "I'd much rather sit on my fat fundament on my ATV than manhandle that thing through the cedar swamps..." And I suspect the prices are comparable, considering how proud DR is of most of their stuff.

You'd be surprised how manuverable they are. I actually like the exercise of walking the trails rather than riding all the time. When there is a down limb or other thing to move I don't have to stop, get off, move the thing, and then get back on. Yes, the cost is a big item to consider but think of the wear a tear it would save your ATV. Brushing is inviting punctured tires on sharp stumps and bushes. Can you tell I am happy with mine and I also have a 6' cutter on a Ford 3000 tractor for the big open areas. If I could only have one it would be the DR.

I have a 42" bushog 8hp belt drive and a clutch. I had to put better tires on it and better locknuts on most of the bolts. It does a very nice job for trails and trimming back ware you cant take a bigger mower.
