I have been shopping around for a grain drill. I know the difference between single disk and double disk openers, but I see designations in advertisements like FB-B and FB-A. What do these mean?

Those are John Deere model designations. The B is the base model drill. F in front means it has an integral fertilizer attachment. (Fertilizer B) Plain FB drills were made from 1948-1953. FB-A (- plus a letter is a variant designator in this system) came along from 1954-59, basically the same as the FB but with more box capacity. FB-B was made 1960 to 1970. Even bigger boxes, and different disk bearings than the earlier models.

Thanks for the help! So anytime there is an "F" in the model this means it has a fertilizer attachment. So if they are just a BA or BB model then they would not have a fertizer attachment? (which is what I would prefer).

Right. A B-B is a B with a bigger box and non-friction bearings in the openers. JD did sell liquid fertilizer attachments for these drills, and there was an add-on dry hopper available, but I don't think many were sold, as those who wanted fertilizer/seed combinations simply bought the FB-B.
