i saw a picture of a older tractor pulling an implement called a "damming lister". it looked to be making a lot of small holes in a field. what exactly is this for? i have never seen one being used or even heard of anyone using one.

I thought from what I have read about them that the damming listers were used in the Dakotas, Montana etc. in the fall. These areas don't get much rainfall but thety do get snow. The idea was that they would catch snow and runoff in the spring and cause it soak in not run off. In the spring you would till amd plant spring grains like wheat.

Used to build Terraces on Pipe lines or in fields that have errosion problems. Know right where one is located, guy offered it to me a few years back, should have taken him up on offer, have no Idea what I would have used it for 40 acres with no errosion problems.

hay. There is a good scene of a John Deere damming lister in operation in one of the two Cylinder club John Deere Day videos. I know this isn't much help, because there are a lot of the videos out, but if you get some and watch you won't be disappointed even if you don't find what you are looking for right away. I think the TCC still has some available and might be able to steer you to the right one if you ask them. Bob

I use a John Deere 3 point lister planter every year. It has two massive plow points that cut a swath about 12" wide. I believe the idea back then was "no till" but it wasn't called that. Field really didn't need to be plowed or disc'd prior to planting and the furrows readily caught the moisture.

I know what one is. They were used in semi-arid areas, and made ditches in which seeds were planted, with dams every so many feet. The idea was that when a flash thunderstorm came along, the rain would be caught in the basins made by the dams and soak in, instead of running off the field.

i believe they are stilll made. might be kind of expensive. but the concept is a good one anywhere, the only problem is when you harvest. does it make it rough at harvest time? think if you are handy with a welder, you might make your own. been thinking about it myself. summer rains after planting is when worst erosion occurs. dammer /diker i believe is proper name. almost positive they are still made
