Good day all! I want to place a wanted ad but need to figure out exactly what I am looking for first. I have a 1937 Farmall F-20 and would like to be able to plow a garden for my wife with it. Probably no more than 1/2 acre. Could see her doing more in the future though. I have seen a few drag type plows advertised in the past and am guessing this is what I need.

Could you guys and gals give your 2 cents on what my needs will be and about how much I should expect to pay.

Thanks!

Ideally, you want a McCormick-Deering, Number 8 Little Genius, 2 bottom, 14 inch, mechanical lift trailer plow(on steel or rubber tired wheels. it doesn't matter), then you need a 8 foot tractor disk, a McCormick-Deering would be nice, but any make will do. If you can't find a disk, a 3 section spring-tooth harrow will do, unless you have heavy clay soil, in which case you'd better get a disk for sure. If you have never used equipment like this before, you are in for a "learning experience". Using an F-20 to plow with and do a nice job is no small accomplishment. But, it can be done and it is real fun when you "get the hang of it", and you will, if you use patience and good sense. If you have already run tractors of the F-20's vintage, you'll find it one of the most satisfying experiences of life to be "back in the saddle again"-working your tractor. By the way-it doesn't have to be that exact type of plow, that's just what they sold with that type of tractor when it was bought new at the IHC dealerships. Good Luck and Have Fun.

...drag plow should be good behind an F-20. It's about the same HP as an H & we used 2-16 pull plows for lots of acres behind an H. Depends on soil type- 2-16 if sandy- 2-14 if heavy soils. Remember that you can't back up if you use pull plows, as the furrow wheel is usually articulating on most of 'em, so that might make some difference in the brand. Case worked the best in our part of SD, but we also had an IH & JD that worked well. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

A two bottom tumble bug pull type should work
real nice behind the F20.

I think a 2-bottom drag plow and a disk harrow would fill your needs nicely. A one-bottom might be easier to manouver in tight spots, but 2 bottoms will be cheaper.

Are these antique only items (which is great) or are there modern equivalents I should also look for?

Thanks!

In your area you should be able to find authentic(Yeah, antique for sure) implements. S.E Michigan/Northern Ohio has plenty of old farm implements, you just get to have the fun of tracking them down. For me, there's no way I would try to use those tools they sell at Tractor Supply or other "generic" farm supply stores, they're all 3-point hitch stuff anyway. If you like showing tractors and engines at local shows, I think you'll love using them as they were intended, with the tools built to be used with them. A '37 F-20 is a jewel of a tractor and to learn it's true personality you've gotta work with it, doing what it was built to do, pulling things it was built to pull. You'll see!!

I'm not AWARE of any "modern" trailer plows, but there's a potload of 'em out there in 2 and 3 bottom configuration. Newer ones, (say 1950 and newer, at a guess) will probably be hydraulic lift, which would be a problem. There should still be enough of the old mechanical lift ones out there in various brands that the price should be reasonable.

Same deal on the disk harrow. Newer stuff will be hydraulic lift and quite wide, more than your average F20 will want to handle. I'm not sure, but I'd think 10 or 12 feet is all an F20 would want.

Of course, it's not impossible to put hydraulics on an F20 either. Probably be a tad costly, but it could be done.
