Gang, I need some advice about brush hogs. I would like to get a brush hog for my 1939 AC-B tractor. I used a sickle bar, but having my tractor redone, I want a hog. Could you give me my advice on what would be best. I would like it to be a 5 foot cut. I am not familiar with brush hogs at all.

thanks,

Scott

I have a '40 B AC and a 5 foot "bushog". I agree the B is under powered for the mower. However I mow a dead flat field with grass only and it does the job ok. If you haven't already purchased a mower I would suggest considering a 4 footer for the B.

I think you can find a pull type 4' bush hog okay. Many can be hand set, adjusting like the top link on a 3 pt. hitch to lower/raise wheels. There are a few companies that make these, I know King Kutter for one, they make an okay bushhog, fine for light-medium cutting. I'm not too familiar w/ AC's, but if the pto is offset this can create a few problems as well.

I don't know why the link isn't working, but here is the address for the main page, then search/scroll down to rotary pull kutters. Good luck, email me w/any questions, I have a little King Kutter 5'.

What is the horsepower of an AC-B? I have a '43 JD-B and was considering a pull type rotary cutter like that 5' King Kutter. Think it would handle it? Dan.

Your B is more powerful than the AC-B. I am not sure exactly of the ac's hp., but I think it is under 20. Your JD should be able to handle a 5' rotary cutter, depending on what you are cutting. I would check on the JD board for sure, as I don't know much about JD's either, mostly only farmalls. I have a little JD M that came w/a 5' rotary cutter, but I have never bushhogged w/it.

www.tractortips.com says that the AC B is
21 at the PTO and 15.6 drawbar while the JD B is 29 PTO and 25.5 HP at the drawbar.

21 HP would be a later model AC "B", they started out around 15, and the early one i had was under powered!! With such a high geared first gear, and only a 3 speed trans., it was one of the few tractors i didn't like, and i gladly sold it!!! I bought an early IH A, and with it's 4 speed trans., and better low end torque engine, it's twice the tractor!! Robert

I agree with F14, I grew up using a couple of B's and I don't think it's the tractor for a bush hog, definitely not a 5 foot.

I don't believe an AC B has the stuff to swing a 5 foot hog. I suspect you'd be happier with a 4 footer.

What sort of hitch does the B have on it? If it's not a 3 point (and I doubt that it is) then you've got another whole set of problems to deal with, such as finding a trailer type hog, and rigging hydraulics to lift it with.

IMHO the B is not your best choice for a bush hog tractor. It WILL however, make a dandy unit to put a midmount on. Woods makes a heavy duty 42 or 48" midmount that will mow some pretty rugged stuff.
