I have a friend here in Southern Va. that wants to fertilize his hay fields. He is not sure what blend should use. It there a blend that is best for most varieties of hay? Someone told him not to go too high with the nitrogen, others say use plenty of nitrogen. Can anyone help with a suggestions as to the best fertilizer blend to use? I would also like your suggestions as to application rates (lbs/acre). I would appreciate your help. Mark R.

Thanks to all of you who responded to my request for help with the fertilizer. I will pass your suggestions on, and suggest my buddy get a soil test before he buys fertilizer. Thanks again, Mark R.

On alfalfa we use 18-46-10 on grass meadows we use 40-20-10 we have high ph soils 7.3 and way above.

The word Hay means different things It could be alfalfa, grass, clover or a blend. check with the local fertilizer dealer.

Check with your local Ag agent to get the best advice. A soil survey would be ideal for determining what exactly would be needed. Sometimes, land that has not been maintained nutrient wise would need some extra phosphorus especially if the land has set idle. I don't know what the pH of the soil in your area runs, but if it is on the acidic side of neutral, all the nutrients you put on it will sink straight down past the reach of the grasses roots unless you ad lime to bring the pH back into reason.

This is just the tip of the iceberg on ideas. The is no "one" answer. Your ASCS office or county extension agent will know the soil types for your area and have a general reason for things that need to be done, but only the survey will fine tune the lands needs. Trust me, this is one thing that is more exspensive to do wrong than to do correctly...

Without a soil test its a shot in the dark. Recommended alot of 13-13-13 to folks who hadn't had a test, but still wanted to fertilize.

Don't know how convenient it would be for you, but I get good results with 2 tons of layer manure per acre (analysis 4-6-3)
