Are there any decent engine driven balers?

I looked at a IH 55W that supposedly works well, but I read the pretty dismal comments here about this baler. I need to bale about 100-200 bales a year. I don't want to spend much, what are my options? The only tractor I have with a PTO is a 1953 TD6 that runs at 840 RPM (the PTO that is). Are there any reduction boxes out there? I don't need to drag a bale wagon in addition to the baler. Thanks for your help.

You mentioned your PTO on the TD-6 runs at 840 RPM.. I've never heard of that speed on a PTO and wonder if that's a typo and you meant 540 RPM?

Based upon your great advice, I went ahead and bought it. The fellow used it to bale 4,000 bales a couple of years ago, swears it works great. I hope so. I'll post a picture of the Red power when I fetch it over from the coast. Thanks again for the help to this old pilgrim.

I tend to avoid IH hay stuff, but it's because of what I've run into with parts prices and availability rather than any great design flaws.

If the baler is in any kind of shape you should be okay. Take your time, get a manual for it if you can and set her up according to it beforehand.

Baling with a TD6 would be a sight but for a couple hundred bales you could probably put up with it.

Long before I was ever around, my garandfather ran a Allis Chalmers Roto-Bailer with an Allis Chalmers "B125" stationary engine. I have the engine now, but don't bother asking for it because nobody outhere in the world has enough to purchase that or his old tractor's from me!!

used to bale 1000 bales a year with a NH 77 baler with wisconsin engine. was a pretty good baler. hardest part was getting it started after sitting over winter. only thing you had to watch was getting your rows too heavy and stalling the motor cause once it stopped hot no amount of cranking would get it going again till it cooled down. saw one go for $35 at a sale last fall.

Rick,

The IH balers get a lot of criticism here. However, They are talking about later models than the 50 55 T's and W's. The twine T had a deering type knotter and they don't get any better than that. the W is a wire and if it is not worn out, go for it. Personaly, if the latter IH balers are adjusted right, twine that is, they will bale with the best of them. The latter IH wire balers had the best twister ever built. It looped the end and twisted. Good tie. I've talked to baler mechanics of all brands and the general rule of thumb for them was "if you make a service call on an old twine baler, once you get it going if it ties ten in a row, jump in the truck and head out to the road and don't look back cause it ain't gonna last long". You see, wore out is wore out. Not like an engine where you just add oil and keep going, to many parts that need to interact. If there wore, it's just not going to happen consistantly.

My opinion! Wheat Straw

For the minimal use you are planning, almost anything should be enough, if the engine starts and the wire ties. The 55 is a good baler so if it is in reasonable shape it will work for you. Your TD6 would be a bit much for baling. Better for pushing stumps, removing big rocks, and cutting new roads.

The TD6 is an IH also (see pictures in the photo gallery). Diesel crawler, way cool. This is what I've been using to disc, harrow and plant with. The IH 55W baler has a 4 cylinder continental engine on it, a big Ol' hunk of iron. I'll post a picture when I get it all together.
