I just bought a Ford 309 2-row corn planter at a auction Sat. for $75. Are they a good machine? It's a little rusty but all there except it has no row markers, and no sign of there ever being any. Where they an option? Are there plates available to plant pumpkins? If so where can I get them? Or can I modify large corn plates to plant pumpkins?

I have two- Paid $350 for first one and second one was given to me. Look at used equipment dealers for plates and get metal if you can the plastic will break. The row markers are desireable if you can find them make sure you get the mounting brackets. All the manuals are available for order at NH dealer.
I suggest that you pull the planter apart and start trying to stop corrosion from the fertilizer distributor. Maybe someone has a suggestion but I wash mine down every time and rinse with deisel. They are very good planters

I've always found the manual markers more of a pain to use than to plant without them. If your tractor wheels are set right, you don't need markers on a two-row. Just a waste of money in my humble opinion.

BTW, never broke a plastic plate in the Ford planter. If you're breaking plates, something ain't right in the seed boxes.

The plastic plates will deteriorate like all plastic. the metal plates don't if they are kept out of fertilizer.
The seed box set up is all the same but they can build up seed and bind and break an old plastic plate

I have a 309 I bought 3 years ago. I forgot how much. The planter plates are availible at your local New Holland dealer. Bring money - sweet corn plates cost about $100. I tried other sources, but it seems that NH is the only place for them. By the way, NH will still sell you a new one. I would guess at 3000. Good luck. Irv

Your local New Holland dealer has the parts and a seed plate size chart.

Most 2-row 309s had no markers, although they were an option. You set you tractor wheels out to 72" for 36" rows, for example, and just follow your wheel track back on each round, the distance from the runner on the planter to the center of the rear wheel being half of your row width. Blank plates are available to cut your own notches in for planting pumpkins, but they cost about $40 more than what you paid for the planter. I'm about to sell my 309 for $450. Wengers of Myerstown, in Lebanon County, PA, has one listed for $1000! So I say you got a deal.
