What a job doing it for the first time with out a picture and directions to use! Also trying to figure out where the extra parts go and finding out they are for the Plow Set up!! The chain is fun to size and adjust so the lift dose not break it. 3-pulleys for the chain not couting the PTO Pulleys and set up bolted to the hitch. Had to pre/load the spring that helps support the Cutter bar (hope I did that right). When I lower it it goes to about a inch from the ground and the chain that supports the end of the bar holds it level (hope that's right to) when in the lower position. Had to lock the lower lift bars because they would lift when raising the cutter up. It took about 2-hours to figure it out from scratch. Was wondering how I would get it under the tractor but you can just drive up to it turn the wheel and steer over it. Found it was easy to use the cutter bar as a lever to tilt the dash end up into the hook mounts, adjust the bolts up to keep it there and used a floor jack to lift the front up into the bell housing mounts. You guys are probley laughting out loud now, but I think I did good!! I think I could do it faster the next time! It works but dosen't cut the snow to good guess I need grass to test it. Mark H.

Thanks for the comments! This was a fun project to do. Not being a Farmer it was a good learning experiance for me. I hate to see these arts lost to time and do like the old stuff to work on! Thanks, Mark H.

You did good! My Kosch mower has an extra hole in the cutterbar for the support rod that holds it vertical when you're not using it . If you hook in the extra hole the the bar angles up at about 45 degrees, and just balances the weight of the mower. Makes it very easy to bolt up.

The cutterbar should actually slide on the ground when in use, if it hangs fromn the chain, it will eventually bend to reach the ground anyway. There should be a runner on both ends of the bar for it to slide on.

SAFETY NOTE: When you are handling the cutterbar, keep your fingers out of the cutting area, unless you have removed the sickle itself. The knife can slide back and forth as you lift the outer end up and down. If your fingers are in there they will be cut, so will an air hose or electic cord, don't ask how I know. Not the fingers thank God.

Signing in blood: Try putting your thumb between the mounting bracket and the tractor, then let the mower slip off the floor jack!!!!

I looked up the John Deere book on www.abebooks.com. The exact title is "The Operation Care and Repair of Farm Machinery". I found about 120 copies for sale, from $10.00 up. mostly 1950's editions in the lower price range, obviously I didn't check them all out closely. 1957 is the 28th edition, so it was around for a long time.

Good Job! Hope you had a good time. It's always fun to do something like that, well, as long as you are not in a hurry. I had a similar experience when I first put my belly blade on my Farmall Super C. Wasn't tooo hard, once I figured it out. Enjoy.

It was fun untill I smashed my little finger with a wrench when it slipped, dug right into the finger nail area. I allways like to sign my work in blood! Mark H.
