Anyone ever heard of using concave coulters on a turn plow?

Speaking about source of harrow disks with a buddy down the road. He's telling me he uses old concave smooth harrow disks as coulter replacements. Claims is provides a better furrow wall (a cup vs. straight). I am not sure if he is pulling my leg or not. I ain't never heard of this before!!

Will pin him down this weekend for details. Where I am confused is how do you/would you adjust them for the plow. He's pulling a 3 btm moldboard plow behind a DEERE 2020.

Thinking about this I'm guessing you would have to set them out about 2" since they would (IMHO) run at an angle. Also, wouldn't the angle restrict trash clearance? OR would the wider set help cover trash.

It would seem to me that if it is set at (my straight coulter setting) of 3/4" from plow bottom it would take too much dirt away from the landside edge of the furrow slice thus reducing scouring of plow bottom behind the concave coulter. How would you set this so it is cutting firm dirt NOT being lifted by the plow bottom?

Because of the shape how do you get it to cut to the bottom of the furrow?

Confused in Baker Co. . .

I saw your earlier post, the one with picture of breaking plow. I have acquired one with 3pt hookup and 2 which hook to International 130, 140.
I use the 3pt hitch one a good bit, mine has a pnumatic tire and crank for adjusting depth of cut. After looking at prices I consider myself lucky, a gentleman in Collins, Ms. gave me the 3 pt. plow.

They are available as fixed, and spring loaded. They are the best way going to get a low-clearance plow to handle trash such as heavy cornstalks. I used to run 2 IH 700 fully trailing plows, and they wouldn't plow stalks worth a hoot till I mounted concave coulters, then they would do as well as a high clearance 720. Long story short, he ain't pulling your leg.

Both White (Oliver) and IH offered concave disks on their plows. This style was intended to be used in trash, like corn stalks, and are meant more for slicing up surface residue than for cutting deep in front of the plow edge. They run at an angle to the land, like this \ ,so that the edge of the disk makes a straight cut. They don't swivel side to side like most straight coulters. I've found them to be useless in stony soil, as the concave coulters seem to bend and break more easily (and they wear faster, too). IF I wanted to take the time to rig a up a disk blade from a disk harrow, which is more substantial than the curved plow coulter blades I've had experience with, it would probably work OK.

The junker JD 145 plow I have also had concaves on it. They are fixed as Tim says, and push the surface trash over to the side, helping with trash clearance. They do wear faster, but on the JD are quite substancial

Concave or disc cutters were offered as after market cutters at first back in the mid 50's as I remember. On the old three bottom plows with little clearence these cutter became popular to help cover trash and reduce plugging. This was at a time when we were just beginning to plow corn stalks in the fall. If the ground is hard you cannot run thes cutters very deep. A couple inches of cutter depth works when plowing 6-7 inches deep with the plow. David B
