I'm new to farming and have a quick question. I have a 10 acre field I want to plant in corn. I have a small tractor a Ferguson To-30. I'm afraid it is too small to run a one row corn picker and pull a gravity box behind. Any rules of thumb for a one row picker? I'm just looking for a general Hp requirements: drawbar hp to pull picker and full gravity box and pto hp to make the picker run properly.

my grandfather pulled a new idea #7 and a 7x14 ' box bed wagon on slightly rolling hills with a 1952 ford 8N . i pulled the same almost identical outfit with a wd and would pile corn in the corners and where ever to build a large load because i was miles from home. i pulled 2 fully loaded wagons and the picker down us 52 during rush hour with my straight 32 hp wd allis! there is a point in picking where the trctor will slip some because of the weight in the wagon. but when it gets past that point , the weight turns back into an asset and you start getting better traction because of the weight . then you go until the wagon gets full, or you can change wagons or it starts to slipp the second time . then you have to unload wagon or hook up to an empty. but the wd seems to be much heavier than the ford /fergies. good luck!

Your Fergie should do it fine. A smaller tractor could be used ok, but it becomes a problem when that wagon behind you gets heavy! I used a new John Deere 4300 behind the New Idea 323 last fall. That little diesel could feel the difference in the weight.

Thanx guys I appreciate all the advice. I forget that these older tractors were cutting edge technology at one time. They were all the farmers had at the time. Like I said I only have 10 acres so it's not too far to unload at the barn. I'll give it a try and see what my ol'gal will do. Thanx again for the advice.

My neighbor used a one-row mounted picker on his Jubilee Ford in the 50s and 60s. No problems 'til the ground got muddy. Very similar in size to your 30 Ferguson.

In the mid 50s the typical tractor on a full size farm was 25-35 drawbar hp and would pull a one or two row picker with a 100 bu flare box. If the field is dry you can probably handle the gravity box but in wet conditions you might just have to unload when it is half full. Sorry to disappoint you, but you might not convince your better half that you need a bigger tractor. Just don't show her this post!

The biggest problem is how MUDDY will it be when it is time to pick your corn..!!! We used to use a #226 2 row mounted picker on our late "B" JD...THAT gave it enough weight to find traction about anywhere... Think about how you will "screen" the radiator, to keep chaf, and corn silk from plugging the radiator ( it gets in thru about anything ).!!

We used to pull our one row JD picker w/a IH 424 that I think had about 36 h.p. I think your tractor will pull it okay, just don't go too fast. As far as the weight, depends on the size of your gravity wagon, but if you are on flat ground it shouldn't be too bad. Them older tractors will surprise ya sometimes. I have seen pictures of Super C farmalls w/mounted 1 row pickers, and they were only 24 horsepower, and regular C's were less.

Well, I have seen video of a 20 hp tractor like the one I own operating a one row picker with the accompaning barge trailer. In the days of one row pickers, I guess the smaller tractors could operate them.

Here in kentucky you wouldn't be able to pull that picker and gravity wagon also because of all ot the hills. But if your groung is level you should be able to do it. Around here we use H farmall's to pull a one row pickerand wagon but if it is on a hillside you can't pick the wagon full because you can't keep the front end of the tractor on the ground

We pulled a 1 row cornpicker and a 60 bu.wagon with a TE-20 Ferguson. If we thought we needed more traction we used the F-12. 2nd gear on your Ferguson should be about right.
