Hello,

I called on an ad last night for a bush hog. I was told that it is a 5 footer, red in color, but no brand markings. It hasn't been run since 1989 when it was purchased used. Asking price is $300.

I am thinking that with it sitting unused for so long there is a good chance of seized bearings and other items that will require major work. Is there anything I can do to check for that ? Anything else I can/should look for ?

Good advice, good chance deck in bad shape especially if it was not cleaned after use.

At the risk of stating the obvious -
1. I would have seller connect up to the tractor and demonstrate it's use. Listen closely for bumping, grinding etc. Make sure they have it completely up to speed - seen to many sellers demonstrate equipment at less than rated capacity yet expect full price.

2. Check gear box before and after demonstration for lube level and quality i.e. water, bubbles, crud etc.

3. Disconnect PTO shaft and have seller lift up all the way and inspect bottom. Check to see if blades sharp, stump jumper in place (optional), blades tight, no rusted through that pose personnel danger.

4. General common sense.

Very good points, thank you.

The seller does not have the tractor anymore. It was sold and whoever bought did not want the bushhog.

I think I am going to pass on this one as it can't be demonstrated functional.
