I purchased a used Woods mower, after preforming much needed repairs, such as, welding reinforcing plates in main stressed areas, sand blasting and painting, removing the blades and resharping, gresae fittings and the like. Refilled the gear box, which was dry. The gear box drained through the lower seal. Tore the box down and replaced the race, bearing and seal, slapped it back on filled the gear box and bushedhogged 5 acres. The new sealed leaked. Question? Did I over fill and blew the seal out, could the shaft be bad (runs smooth when operateing), over tighting the packing nut or replacement not done correctly.

Don't forget to polish with Crocus Cloth, after you use emory.... I have seen "Slip-on" type "shaft-savers", that are very thin stainless steel... Slips on over the shaft, and the new seal lip rests on the new surface... If the leak is not from over-filling, and is not bad, I have mixed EP Grease 50/50 with 90W..(Equal parts)..Does not seem to foam... 50/50 EP Grease, and STP for more serious leaks...!!!!! ! 50/50 White Petrolium Jelly, and 90W for chains..

If the parts were the right ones, I'd check for a vent on the gear box- if it has one it should not be plugged. Might be a pipe plug with a hole drilled through it, and a cotter key in the hole- lets pressure escape when operation creates heat in the box. When installing a seal, check that the shaft has no nicks in it that tears up the seal. Might need some emory cloth treatment. Also put some grease or vaseline on it.
