We are looking for a new, to us anyway, haybine for this year. We've had a NH self propelled, Hesston hydroswing and Badger (Massey,Miller). But those have either been sold or are breaking down alot from being worn out. Does anyone have any experience and recomendations on the Discbines that are out there. We are looking at baling about 150 acres of hay this year. There are some large rocks to deal with. How do they work in rocky fields? Thanks for any help, LB

Bought a New Idea 5209 in 1990, and would never go back to any sickle cutter. NH haybine was good, had JD800 swather for ten years, but discbine has them all beat. Less maintenance in rocks or gopher mounds than sickle bar units. 5209 might be called a modular unit, but it still has one common shaft running through all units, so repair of a middle unit may require major teardown. Recent modules are built heavier, so blowing cutterhead tops off is less likely. Thicker cast, more protected bolts. I would look at other discbines, but never at another sickle cutter. Excellent when cutting point rows, merging windrows on final narrow cut of a land, virtually never plugs crossing windrows. Will cut weeds higher than a cab tractor. Picks up flat alfalfa, etc.

Thanks for all the great advice guys. I've been really thinking about trying one. We don't have the money to buy a new one so we probably won't get to test one from a dealer. We'll have to buy a used one and just see how it goes. It's best to at least have some good advice from people that have used them. Thanks again. LB

Me a a few friends do custom mowing/baling together every year. Last year one of them bought a brand new JD MoCo 12ft discbine. That thing was a total disappointment. He ended up breaking 4 rollers in less than 50 acres, JD covered them all, but he got tired of waiting around. And now has a NH 12ft discbine. I and two others are still running NH 489 swathers. The swathers can't run as fast as a discbine, but pick up downed hay better and can make a narrower windrow for square baling. We run in some rocky areas and both swather and discbines do alright, althought the discbine does throw a rock a long ways. We didn't have any breakdowns because of rocks in the last 2 years.

If you have rocks, you want a machine with modular cutterbar components, not one long shaft and gearbox. That way, if you hit something and cause damage, it doesn't happen to the whole cutterbar, only the one section of it. The New Idea 5209 is modular (and I believe the Hesstons are now the same machine), and I think Vermeer also has a modular cutterbar now. I don't know who else offers modular cutterbars, you'd have to ask when you go to look.

I ran a Hesston disc type for a friend once and you will never want to go back. I ran his hydroswing for 6 years and that disc type was great to operate.
