Okay guys, I've been seeing pictures of sub soilers and middle busters on some sites of implement dealers. So what exactly do guys use these for? Can you bury wire or pipe with either of these? We didn't have any of these fun toys when I was a kid on the farm (too many years ago) but if'n I can come up with some interesting uses for 'em maybe the you-know-who would let me get one !!

I use my middle buster to open up furrows for planting pine trees. this gives the trees a little head start by removing the competition due to grass roots.

Down here in NC we use them for planting wire and pipe as much as for busting hard pan but a middle buster works great for digging potatoes..

like oliver farmer says. by breaking soil it can drain water away from wet spots also. i used mine to bury pipe once. worked so well that i made a special subsoiler with longer shank and a boot at the rear to feed pipe or electrical cable. they eat up horsepower though.

Depends where you live on the pipe - frost line is 4-5 feet here, have to go 6 with water pipe. That would be a heck of a tractor & subsoiler. :)

Thanks guys, always nice to learn something new. I do have a couple hundred feet of wire to bury, just might give that sub soiler a try.

a sub soiler is used to break or bust up the hard pan that developes under the surface of the soil due to compaction by conventional farming.
