Has anyone ever tried Bale Skiis Bale liners for there square hay baler chamber? I was just wondering how well they worked and how durable they are? I have a NH 273 baler that always makes banana shaped bales no matter what adjustments I make or how much hay I feed into it. The only thing I havent replaced on it yet are the hay dogs. They are getting replaced this year.

Thanks, Rick

Is anyone going to comment on the Baleskiis or just get on top of their soap boxes?

Youneed to check your knifes on the plunger make sure that they are sharp and adjusted properly You say that you have a book read it and it will tell you how to adjust the plunger. I have never used the bale skis but have literature on it but it was expensive. A well adjusted baler(NH Baler) feed it uniform and below recomended pto speed will produce good bales.

Thanks, for all the responses. I am new to hay baling with little experience and knowledge. I enjoy working outdoors and working with the equipment.I bale grass hay with clover in it for our horses.I installed new feeder fingers last year and new hay dog springs and pins. I haven't replaced the hay dogs yet. The baler is stored inside, however the bale chamber is pitted pretty good from the previous owners. When I bought the baler it came with 8 hay wedges in the bale chamber. It was used for straw before. I removed 2 sets of wedges in the rear of the chamber because the bales were to tight and heavy. The bales are 3 feet long. The banana shape is on the left side of the bale looking at the baler from the rear. The manual said that I am feeding to much hay to the far side of the chamber. I made both adjustments the manual suggested. The only thing I might be doing wrong is that I am using Poly (plastic) twine. I am going to use the New Holland "7200" lb. sisal twine this year to see if that helps. The baler never misses a knot and it is very dependable

The twine usually doesn't cause problems like that. I considered putting Bale-Skis in my JD 336 baler, but to convert is expensive. It may help a baler with a worn bale chamber make better bales.

You might try taking out the 2 hay wedges that are on the far side of the bale chamber so there is just the 2 on the knife side OR try putting the 2 wedges back on the knife side so there is 4 on the knife side and 2 on the far side. In my experience with this problem it has a lot to do with the size of the windrow and the speed you are traveling. Hope this helps.

We purchased a 273 new in 1972. We sold it in 1993 for $1500. It had always been shedded and had only been wet once (we carried a tarp to the fields that were away from the house). My vote is the dogs need changing, also check the lenght of the fingers on the cross feeder. They may be worn and not feeding the hay evenly into the press. We purchased the 273 with a new 256 rollabar rake in March or April of 1972, the Baler was $2400 and the Rake was $800 for a total price of $3200. Those were the days! We still have the rake.

Sorry to not address your question about the liners but...I have a 271 and had the banana problem as well. I adjusted the dogs like the others have suggested and tried what one person suggested a couple years ago on this site. That was to feed the hay into the baler on the far left side of the pickup. Far left being the side farthest from you when you're sitting on the tractor. This seemed to work for me, good luck.

If it's any consolation- one thing NH balers are known for, other than being extremely good, is that banana bales are always a problem, no matter the maintenance or adjustment.

I must be lucky - I have a 270, and I have to ask, which way do the bales 'banana'? Top to bottom, or left to right? Never really ever had a problem with it in my bales. Always the same way?

Saw a NH sell for $22.50 today at auction - it was very well weathered to say the least. There was a 273 there also with belt thrower, but someone talked to me, not sure what it brought. Also a 851 chain round baler, $900 - it was well worn, & had sat outside a lot.

Saw a 275 sell yesterday for $1000. The paint wasn't even worn off the bottom of the pickup!

I've got a 276 and I don't have any banana problem, however I don't make the bales much longer than three feet long. Does the baler need more ribs put in the bale chamber?

I put all new springs and pins on the hay dogs last year. I noticed that some of them wern't straight in the chamber because of excess wear on them. Thanks for the info.

I'd check those hay dogs and see if they aren't rusted tight. Had this problem and they definitely affected the banana bale thing. Worked them loose with liquid wrench and haven't had crooked bales since I got the TA working in the 560 so I can keep it feeding evenly.
