I've been looking at a IH 2400 baler at a dealers lot. The price sounds cheap ($750.00). It needs quite a bit of attention though. Bottom belt is worn pretty bad and I learned its not cheap to replace. I,m also looking at a JD 430 priced at ($3000.00). Dont know alot about these either. Can anyone tell me what these balers are like? Are the bales tighter on the JD and is the JD overpriced? The JD looks to be ready for the field.

Thanks

I owned a IH 241, an eariler model than the 2400, for several years. Big problems are: (1)the press roller that pull hay in, if hay is too dry you have problems, could spent a lot of time cutting out roller laps. (2) my 241 had a drive ilder socket in a slot not on an arm with a spring as later models. Belt replacement will possibly run $750 to $1000. Do not buy a baler with a press roller if possible!!!! I now own a NH 846. may buy good baler later. It might be to wait until hay season to try a baler out.
email me for other questions.

With out seeing these bales it's hard to give an informed opinion, but around here any round baler costing $750 is probably worn out. I don't have any experience with the IH 2400. I have owned a couple of JD round balers, last one was a 435. The 430 is a little earlier model. Condition is the important thing. Check, belts, bearings and chains. Has it been kept inside? Does it have gathering wheels? A kicker? I would choose the JD because of parts support and reputation, much better resale and it makes a 4X6 bale compared to 5X6 bale on the IH which means you can use smaller equipment to run, haul and feed the bales. The price isn't bad if the baler is in good condition. It's possible to sink a lot of money into one fast if it's in poor condition.

Clem & Charles, Thank you both for your responses. These are the kind of things I am needing to know as I have little experience with the round balers. Your information is valuable. Thanks again.
