i'd like to replace the broken and missing wooden handles on my father's horse drawn plows and potato digger. i've tried to make them myself before and found them to be a poor example. does anyone have ideas on who still may produce these? how did the early farmers deal with handle replacement?

Hi Smirkey,
My local farm store has handles and I bought a set for my push plow because I was too lazy to make my own. They cost about $15.00 each.
Up until about 20 years ago we still made all our wooden tools and handles that we used on the farm. Hammer, axe, hoe, you name it. Mauls and wedges for splitting firewood too. Porch chairs still have the white oak split backs and bottoms. I still know how, but getting old and lazy. Good luck.

Howdy,

I get mine from a Amish buggy maker up by me. His address is:

Mast Buggy Shop
W5253 Barry Rd.
Dalton, Wisconsin 53926

I can't remember what I gave for the last set I picked up from him but I'm guessing it was around $12 or $18 for the pair. They are stock handles so you are going to have to cut them to size.

My 2 bits worth,

Old Iron

I have a card from a place that sells all kinds of wood parts. Yoder woodbending & carriage co. They don't have a phone or electricity. Name on the card is Orva Yoder 23351 348th st. Edgewood, IA 52042. THey do plow handles, tongues, double trees, neck yokes, buggy wheels and you name it. they use a steam press to bend the wood for the plow handles. Their prices were not too bad either.
