I know Ferguson had one for the 9N. It looks like a small chisel plow with double return springs on each shank. I have one and it works great. Tom-Pa

John Deere-Van Brunt made them at least as early as 1930 (model CC?) Have seen pictures of spoker Ds and early As pulling them in JD sales lit. I believe they were originally intended for use in fallow wheat ground to kill weeds. Then they found their way into other areas.

Around here, they were called "quack lifters". They were very valuable for working up sodded fields, dragging the quack grass roots up to the surface so the sun could dry and kill them. We usually cut up the field with a disk-tiller twice, at 90 degree angles (that second pass was a rough one!) before attempting the field cultivator. We had one on rubber from Deere, probably built in about '47 or '48. My uncle had one on steel built before that. They worked well, dug deep if necessary, had lots of clearance for trash, shear pins on each shank -(replaced often in our rocky fields.) Wish I could have ours back again, but it's long gone!
