What's better, a 5 foot Bush Hog Brand Squealer for $750 or a 5 foot Howse model 0500(I think that's the model #) for $850. The squealer does come with a slip clutch, but I've been told that the squealer's are nothing but cheap junk. Is this true? I always thought that Bush Hog made really good stuff, but I've got no personal experience. I'm going to be cutting some pretty heavy stuff(Big wild rose bushes and some small saplings, about 2 inches in diameter). Thanks for the input. Casey

I recently priced the Model 500 Howse at $665 (weight 505 lbs.) I also priced the model 5000 Howse at $1100 (weight 815 lbs.) Both are 5'. A local rental company uses the model 5000 they are pretty tough but a little heavy.

I have a 5' Howse. Agree that it is not as "good" as the Squeeler but it is adequate for what I use it for - grass and the small stuff that comes up in my meadow between mowings. A basic Howse Model 500 should cost $480 to $520 (Arkansas price). Slip clutch and chains are options. The Squeeler will be a lot more. Both the Howse and the Squeeler are utility rigs. King Kutter makes a comperable rotary cutter that falls somewhere between the Howse and the Squeeler in price. If you do not have a lot of 2" saplings (you said some) consider taking them out with a chain saw. Rotary cutters leave a staub that will still be there every time you mow. Cutting them off close to the ground and burning them will give you a much better result and it will be easier on your equipment. Rose bushes should be no problem for a rotary cutter. I mow a lot of berry canes with my Howse. More weight is a good recommendation if you have the tractor to pull it. In my case, the Howse, at about 500 lbs, is just about it. You have to be able to pick it up and when it is up you have to be able to steer. Another thought - if this is a one time deal to be followed by maintenace mowings consider hiring out the heavy work and buying an utility grade cutter for the maintenance work. Good luck.

I made the mistake to buy a Howse mower last time. Thats the nearest to nothing I had since I bought a chevy pick up to use on the farm for work

To those of us that live in areas that have rough
terrain 5'bush hog seem to be the prime choice.

Have used a 6' Bush Hog Squealer for 4 years now and I'm very happy with it. It chews up 1-2 in. sumac. I've spun that slip-clutch often enough to be glad it's not a shear pin setup.

These 2 guys are right. There is no comparison. Brush Hog is the much better, only thing I wish I could afford one.

Bush Hog has a good warranty and plenty of spare parts. Neither the Howse or the Squealer will last long in 2" material. Get a heavier mower if you want it to last and not have to replace things such as gearboxes and drivelines.
