I'm looking for a rotary tiller and am curious if anyone out there has suggestions on the best one. Looking for one that is gear driven, not chain. Do they make this type? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, John

I like the howard tillers too. I compared many brands before buying my 70" howard. The others didn't seem as well made.

Howard is one of, if not the "best" tiller on the market. Personally, i prefer the chain drive! In the Howards, the chains are over sized, and as long as you keep oil in the chain case, it will last as long or longer than gears will. If you live long enough to wear it out, the chain and sprockets will cost less to replace. I've used the Howard in the picture for comercial use for over 20 years now, and it still has the origional chain and sprockets!!! I've hit just about anything you can name, and sliped the clutch on pipe, motor blocks, fence post, concrete, starters, chain, and things i don't even remember!! The ground is full of trash, and Howard has proven their chain drive Rotavators are as strong as they come!! Robert

Whatever the drive mechanism, Howard is the pretty well the cadillac of rotary tillers. (Pure IMHO here)..

Why do you want gears in particular ? If you have the 'big wreck' someday (like you will) I'd rather pop a chain.
