Anyone know how to change the seed drop? There seems to be nothing on the transmission to move. Russ

Thanks all, finally found the little lever which had been turned so as to be not real noticiable. Was also frozen but got it freed up. I guess those 42 years working on those things at 40,000 feet has taken the edge of my farm knowledge. Russ

The planting rate is controled by three different variables. Easy is 1-2-3 on the planter shaft, actually this slides the shaft back and forth in the gear box each position beig a differnt speed, a simple transmission. There should be two different sprockets to drive the gear box sprocket that is like a fast and slow to make the combination with the gear box shift lever six speeds in all. Then you have your choice of 16 cell or 24 cell plates which again vary the rate. It is all explained in a operators manual with population and hill distance charts. This can still be bought at your J D parts dealer

There is a round shaft through the gear box. On one side, not sure which, there two holes in the shaft about 3/16" and maybe two inches apart. The shifter is held between the holes with cotter pins. This shaft moves left to right to change gears in the gear box. There are three choices.

Look for a lever with the numbers 2,3, and 4 nearby. That is the number of kernels dropped per hill, at least on a 494. 290 might be similar.

How about multiple sprockets with a flat drive chain, giving you different rates?

Nope only one big sproket to one small one. But the plate has 24 holes maybe they do it with the plate. Russ
