My dad bought an old New Holland square baler quite a few years ago. I like to show our tractors at local shows. I would like to restore this baler. I'm not interesed in getting it running because almost everything is stuck on the thing. Like I said in the title it is a New Holland model 77 baler. It's ser# is 34948. What year is this baler. What would be a good tractor to pull it with. I would like to get a Ford tractor since it is a New Holland baler. What year and model tractor would commonly pull one of these balers?

My father bought one in 1953 new. We pulled it with a 40 JD. Had to put the front weight's on it to pull up our big hill to keep front end on the ground. Our Ford Jubilee wouldn't make it without spinning out. These old balers when new could bale about anything green or dry. We sold it in 1989. The best thing about them was the bales were never the same length if you had a long or short hole when stacking wait a few bales and you got it.

Late 40's or early 50's, Was not conected with Ford at that time, Ford did not make a tractor till 55 that could handle that baler, with a motor the fords befor that were only big enough for the smaller 66 baler, the larger unstyled J.D.A worked better with the 66 than the 2N Ford

The flywheel on one side will have the casting date on it this will be close to the baler production date. If you pull it with an 8N (1948-1952) or NAA (1953-1954) Ford, make sure you have calcium in tires and rear wheel weights on and going up hills you may need to steer with the brakes.

NH 77 is probably late 50s- very early 60s. Neighbor had one and I left home in '64. Good sized baler, big capacity. Typical power might be WD45, Farmall M, Oliver 88, etc. Neighbor's had own engine, was pulled by an M.

We got(well my landlord) one with a V-4 Wisconsin engine on it and it works very well. I think the one we have was built in 1949(I think?). They are a very useable baler even though they aren't the fastest thing on the planet. I don't think I would want a Ford on ours, the 77 with its own power unit would push an 8-N all over our rolling hills, even though the manual states any two plow or larger tractor can handle it. I think the ultimate tractor on one of these is a Farmall Super M-TA! We pulled it with our M-TA and the torque came in handy. Our landlord pulled it back in the day with a unstyled JD B on steel, then a Styled JD A, and the last tractor he had on it was JD 620.

Let me know if you need and info or pictures, I have one, but I got 3pt equipment all around it now since I have bought a NH 269 to do our hay, so I won't get it out until Aug for staw.
