We have a 20 acre field that we want to eventually plant coastal in. Does this still require to be sprigged, to be planted? We are going to put hay grazer in it this spring, (I know a little late, but we have only had it for 2 wks), with a grain drill. Thanks for all of your replies!

Trailerman,

From what I have been told in the past is that you should sprigg in January or early February. Check with your local Fertilizer company. They will be able to give you a couple of people who will be able to sprigg your place for you. Around my parts, it is about 40-50 per acre. Lastly, since it is free, have them test your soil to insure that you get the right fertilizer mix.

sprigging is the only way to plant coastal. i have seen some friends sprigg it out as late as mid-august in a dry summer and still make a hay cutting before first frost in se texas. if you have any significant sub moisture, then the spriggs should grow well as long as the soil is packed firmly after sprigging.and if you are lucky to get a good soaking rain shortly after sprigging then the coastal will almost grow right before your eyes.
