I bought a 12' JD wheel disk last year and need to tighten the front gangs. One problem. Every time I go to turn the nut the gang turns with it. This is my first disk and was wondering if there was a trick to it? Thanks

Oftentimes the lug on the shaft opposite the threaded end is not much steel to hook a wrench to. Same problem on my Glencoe SoilSaver. Welded 1 1/4 inch pipe about 6 inches long to each gang end. Just stick a crowbar through it, and the nut can be tightened. Should work the same way on a disc. Tightening on the ground may not work for more than a turn or so- the blades need freedom to move. Whether disc or soilsaver, I always use a 3-foot cheater pipe on the wrench- can't get them too tight, and sure beats fixing them in the field. Much less finding all the parts in the dirt- especially at midnight! With either machine I watch more behind than forward, but at five mph it doesn't take long to spew parts over 200 feet.

Yup that's alot of fun. Lookin' for disc parts, especially if your granddad is doing the discing! Locktite might also be in order for that little number!

No tricks; just got to hold the axle somehow. Large pipe-wrench on spacer might do it, depending on disk model; but probably not. Simplest way may be to get a length of 2 X 6 or whatever and "wedge" it between one or more blades and the frame; or if you have a 3/4 or 1 inch impact, may can tighten just by letting the disk down on the ground.
