I just looked at a #303 baler. Can get for $100. The hook knotter (duck bill as I call it) is rusty. I know that it should be shinny and slick so the twine will slide off. Can I shine it up with fine sand paper or will it have to be replaced before it will tie??? IF so will it be so expensive that My baler isn't cheap anymore?

Thanks in advance for your advice

Use some ultra fine sand paper or emory cloth or steel wool to polish the "duck bills". Also, make sure the cutter knives are sharp. I fired up an old New Holland Super 66 last spring and the darn thing wasn't tieing...kicking out screwed up bales left and right. I wrongly thought the knotter wasn't working. It was tieing just fine, it just wouldn't cut the twine! I touched the cutting edge of the knives with the die grinder using a carbide bit and she bales just fine.

The duck bills are a little cashy...I replaced one on this NH and it was over $50. The one I replaced had thick grooves worn in the steel.

Good luck

I've only seen 2 of these balers in my area and they both were around about 30 years ago. One was owned by a neighbor the other by my uncle. Seemed to keep the dealer serviceman busy most of the summer cause he was usually seen riding around on both of these balers trying to make them tie. Maybe was just these 2 but from what I've seen they weren't very good balers. Mark

Mark sounds to me like the service man who worked on the baler didn't know what he was doing. I've never had a square baler I couldn't make tie.
