Christmas Tree Mowing

I have a small Christmas tree farm. I am looking for ideas on modifying a lawn tractor to make it more like a Bush Hog. The reason is that the lawn tractor is more manuverable than a tractor/bush hog combo and is narrower than a tractor. I am also lazy and want to ride as opposed to a walk behind mower such as a DR mower. Anyone have any good ideas or experiences?

I've been using 2 Bolens QT 17's since they were new in 1978...48" deck. Had to put in the all steel mower deck pulleys, but that was all, and they will chop 1" thick Multiflora Rose all day.... Had xmas trees since 1978.....

Grew up in the Mountains of NC during the early days of Christmas trees up there. We used a walk behind Roof but then the hills our family had were too steep to put anything on which was why they were in trees. If you are serious about growing trees then start looking for a small 4WD compact that will handle a 4' hog and take the extra time to plant the trees so they line up horizontal, vertical and each of the 45's so that you can mow fast ans simple. You will use the tractor for alot more than just mowing. The spraying and other things will work easier with one of these little fellows

Check out Tractor Supply Co. They have tow behind mower units that up to 48" equiped w/motor. They're designed to be pulled by an ATV. They run in the $800-$1200 range.

BT-DT! Get yourself an older Snapper Rider, 24" or 26" cut, not the newer kind w/rolled edge deck. Remove the baffel under the deck & put on a 10 or 12 horse B&S. I gurantee, if the Snapper will go over it, it'll chop it up like silage, but ya gotta keep the deck drive belt tight. It works best to use a drive belt off of a Heston milo head for a deck drive belt-they're a lot tougher. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

a wisconsin engine is the best. i got an old 30" snapper rear engine 10 hp wisconsin & it'll cut anything it goes over. i also got a newer snapper rear engine w/ a 12.5 b&s, it chokes on anything besides a low growing lawn

Northern tool is advertising a tow-behind self-powered mower that could be characterized as a 'mini-bush hog'. Think it's supposed to cut up to 1-1/2" saplings. Not cheap though.

Get yourself a Gravely walk behind. 30" bush hog
attachment for mowing. They still make them new
www.gravely.com. or find a used one. Made from
1920's to now. They make a riding sulkey also.
There are several on ebay.
