Using my cheapo disk yesterday and didn't notice that the end nut, etc came off of the shaft on one of my gangs. End result is that the disc wallowed around and boogered up the threads on the shaft and eventually fell off. Now I have to put the disk back on but no way to get the nut, etc on. I wonder if you can buy another shaft? Anybody ever had this happen? thanks

How bad are the threads screwed up? If you've got anything left, it's possible to 'chase' them with a 3-cornered file or a hacksaw.

Rethread the shaft then use a second nut to lock the first one in place. Most discs have a washer under the nut that the ears bend, one up and one down to hold the nut from turning.

Guys, thanks! I was able to find the bolt yesterday at an out of the way farm supply place...$15.00 fixed it. I will add the second nut all the way around so this doesn't happen again. thanks!!

I believe the shaft is called a "bolt". If you can get it rethreaded, that would be the easiest and cheapest. Those nuts have to be TIGHT. It is best to tighten it as best you can, and then retighten it every few passes the first times you use it and it gets bounced around the field. Even if it is really shot maybe a machine shop could build it up, turn it down and thread it. If you buy a new bolt the length is critical, especially if it is a square bolt and you want the disks to sit on the square part. Just changing the thickness of the discs from say 11 guage to 9 guage can push everything furthur out and you can run out of thread, or the outermost disk may be off the square part. Use a good, sturdy, thick nut so that it has more threads to grab on and not as likely to strip or come loose.

Good advice Hal.
Another thing you can do to save the bolt/shaft is cut off the old threads and weld the end of a similar dia bolt onto it. Any decent welder could do that for him for probably not too much $.

Good idea about welding it Ultradog. Speaking of saving $$, you said you may know of a source for the cast white metal spools and caps? I have a Ferguson AB-022 3-pt disk, and I would like to keep it going if I can get the bearing parts reasonable. Maybe 15 years ago I got some from a place in Pa that was casting them, but they are out of business, suppossedly sold the molds to someone in Ohio. Any ideas?? The parts from MF, as I believe Tim said, are outrageously priced.

You didn't mention what brand the disk is. There is a company called Shoup Manufacturing that sells tillage parts including disk shafts for most major brands. Generally their prices are pretty reasonable.

Try using a thread die, I have seen nuts welded on shafts.
