I rented one called a"Billy Goat" works the same as a Dr. Cut stuff up great, only drawback is they leave 6"to8" stumps that have to be cut down if you want to use the area and not trip every 3 feet!

I've owned one of the DR 12.5 HP units for several years. It's a good machine and you can put it in places where you would not dare to take a tractor-mounted bush hog (Side hills, swampy ground, etc.). It WON't do things as fast as a full size unit, but if you don't have a huge area and you have a liitle patience, you can get the job done. Inch and a half stuff is a liitle bigger than I would tackle, but it probably will cut the stuff, leaving a jagged stump behind. One of the other posts asked about using the unit on side hills. The DR has a mechanism for locking the differential and you can operate on side hills, but let me tell you, it will give you a real workout, especially trying to turn the thing with the wheels both driving. A DR field and brush mower works great. only TV add I ever saw that really was accurate. Haven't tried 1.5 inch but will cut 1 inch and leaves everything smaller than 8 inches in lenght.
GREAT MACHINE.

You won't have any trouble cutting 1 to 1.5" brush w/ a walk-behind brush cutter. Practice moving and steering the unit for a little while BEFORE engaging the blade--just to get the hang of it. You want to ease into the brush, sweeping right or left, not lurching into stuff head on. Keep the dogs and kids away and wear your saftey glasses! Good luck

Do any of you fellows have experience using the DR on steep hillsides? Are they hard to handle or tiring to use?

I have an older DR Brush Mower and I live on a
mountain side. The only problem mine has is it
didn't come with reverse gear so it can be a job
in tight spots. It is probably the best machine
I've ever owned and will take down any 1.5" stuff
that I've ever ran across.

I have a DR Classic Model 1995 vintage with the IC Briggs motor. It cuts tall grass good, although sometimes, 5ft. Orchard grass wrapped around the shaft and had to be cut off. To cut brush you use the heavier brush blade. The only problem I had, is a stick got and cut the fan belt. My belt is exposed, and the newer ones are enclosed. It is about the best walk behind, and mine is actually made by the Bachtold company, and was sold by DR. One and a half inch to me is too big for my machine, I would use my brushcutter, wide handled with a saw tooth blade. Just my experience. thanks.
