Finishing mower: Side vs Rear Discharge ?

I am getting ready to purchase a 6' finishing mower and would like to know the pro's and con's of side vs rear discharge. I have never had a rear discharge but it seems like they would be less likely to clog up and would spread the clippings out better. What is the down side of rear discharge mowers? Thanks

"If", it was my money being spent, i'd buy a Woods read discharge! I like the Woods design better than the others i've looked at. The fellow below mentioned his Kubota rear discharge clogged some, well, it must be a Kubota problem as none of the other brands i've seen have this problem. I see all kinds of disavantages to a side discharge, and none with a rear discharge! Robert

A rear discharge won't leave "windrows" if you are cutting thick grass. It should also allow you to be able to cut wetter grass without clumps. As far as the difference in horsepower needed between the two, it's really minimal and doesn't make a whole lot of difference. Also, w/a side discharce, if you are cutting one way it will put all the cut grass in the area you still have to cut, so you cut it again and is thus more grass and harder on the tractor. A rear you can cut how ever which way you want. I have a older woods side discharge, but I am considering getting a landpride or a woods rear discharge soon.

I USE A WOODS RD7200 (REAR DISCHARGE 72") BEHIND MY 1950 FORD 8N. I USED TO USE A SIDE DISCHARGE, BUT I LIKE THIS REAR DISCHARGE MUCH BETTER. THE REAR DISCHARGE DISPERSES THE GRASS MUCH MORE EVENLY, AND I THINK THAT THE REAR DISCHARGE PULLS LESS HORSEPOWER. PHILIP

I work for a park system. We have a 60" Kubota mower with rear discharge. It clogs up a lot more than the other Kubota with side discharge. But it's fine in shorter dry grass. It spreads the clippings out a little better. Its nice when near roads you don't have to worry about throwing rocks and stuff at cars. We also have a 12 foot Progressive mower with rear discharge. It spreads the grass out and as long as you have a tractor with some power it doesn't clog. I don't think there is to many problems with a rear discharge. I like them better for the most part. Hope this helps some.
