I bought a new one at an auction for $55. I don't think you can buy the material much cheaper than that. You may want to see what is available in your area before you build one. They do work well.

I agree they are quite handy. I went to the junk pile and removed an old 2" reciever hitch from a junk pickup. Made two square plates to close the ends, drilled holes in the plates for CAt 1 hitch pins and then just used old bush hog top link staps for upright (could have added a piece of 3/8" x 2" strap to each end to make the top link mount) Zero cost

Works well
