I am looking at a 494 john deere planter. The asking price is $475.00 and it is in southeast michigan. It is in great shape as are the fert bins. I have 38ac that I want to plant and also would like to use it for soybeans and sorghum.

After doing a search on the archives. This price seems a bit steep for a 494. What would be a good price to offer.

We recently purchased a 494 John Deere planter at an auction for $20, and was wondering if anyone knew any info about it. It didn't come with any type of manual or papers and is missing one of the row closers on the back. If anyone has any info would be appreiciated.

If she is field ready 400 georges would not be out of line. I paid 500 for a 1240 plateless, and have invested about 50 bucks and too many hours getting ready for the field. Good Luck,

I bought a 494A several years ago and I paid for
my ignorance..I bought it for $500. Fert boxes were soso. I overhauled the thing and is in real nice shape. I repaired, blasted, painted the fert boxes, augers, discs, tore down and cleaned every nook and cranny etc, but I have yet to use it because I wisely decided planting corn is a no-profit maker for sure. Wish I was a little wiser before I bought the darn thing. So now it just sits in the shed. I keep it oiled up with wd40 and covered. Dont want to sell it because I couldn't stand to see how much money I threw away with the purchase and overhaul costs and also figured shortly after I do sell it I will then find a need for it..

Time of year may determine price to some extent. If you think it is too high rent or borrow a planter. If you don't have a planter and don't have other options I would not quible over a $100 and miss getting my crop in the ground. Look at the amount it will cost you to get your crop planted otherwise and think about the value of your time. If the fellow still has the planter after planting season the price may be reduced. Guns, boats and hunting dogs are often priced less in the off seasons. Others did not state if they bought before during or after planting season.

I paid $200 for one this spring. It came with the manual and extra corn plates.Check the fert. augers good they tend to corroid away and crumble.Used parts seem to be easy to get.

I bought a 494-A with bad fertilizer boxes but everything else good for $100. A nice one with good fertilizer parts and double-disk openers will bring close to $400 where I live. One just as nice but with runner openers will only bring $250 tops. That 1240 plateless wouldn't have brought that where I live. For some reason, people in my part of the country have an extreme dislike for the early JD finger pickup units.

1240 plateless was not nearly as good a planter as the 7000- course, nothing was! And the 1300 needed a tank to drag it around the field. 494s around here go for little more than scrap price- they date back to the 50s, and the A version is early 60s?
