Working with an old Case baler that did well last year. This year I've got rain on the way and it won't tie one bale right. No changes made to the thing except I lubed the fittings. The problem is that it doesn't hold both strings when the knotter starts to spin, the string from the back side of the bale falls off the end of the knotter. Empty chute and string held by hand it works fine. The angle of that back string is such with hay there that it's different enough to fall off the knotter. ???? Someone said to replace the plastic twine?

The twine is the same thing as last year but that wasn't near the problem. It looks as though I had extreme luck last year. There's a lever for each twine that is supposed to swing below the needle as it cycles across(this old Case 133 has horizontal tying action, possibly the only baler made that way! LOL)and then bring the twine back towards the knotters when the twisting starts. Both of these levers were rusted in place and out of adjustment thereby not helping the tying process. Took from Fri. 6pm to 2am and Sat. 9am +/- to about 4:30 pm until we figured it out. Pretty well know that baler now though! Also "we" broke on of the knotters twice and welded and reformed it so I'm definitely going to get at least one spare. Again fellas, thanks a bunch. We beat the rain.

The real reason you're having trouble is that rain is on the way. Baler law says that all knotters shall act up the minute the hay is ready and just as the sky starts to cloud over. Another area to check would be the twine tension at the twine box as each type of twine presents different resistance at that point.

Baler Knotters use spring tension to hold the twine in the twine disk. If the characteristics of the twine change then the holding power changes. Switching from sisal to poly (as is from 9000 to 10000 sisal) is a major change of both diameter and slickness and typically requires a complete set of adjustments and a complete tune up. That makes switching between the two not recommended. I am sure some poeple will reply here that their baler works with either but they would be the exception instead of the rule. The manual for that baler should have the settings and with a couple of good scales you should be able to go through the whole setup process. My recommendation to you would be to go buy the same exact twine you were using last year and replace whatever twine is in there.

I had simalir problem last year i got a (good deal) on a off brand of twine and it would not tie in two different balers so i am sure it was the twine as i replaced it with twine that i normally use and they worked fine . point is make sure you are using the same brand and size twine that you used last year hope you get it figured out before you get rained on good luck .mike

It is definetly harder to hold plastic than sisel. I prefer sisel but not to say baler won't tie plastic. Losing the strig that is in the twine holder you need to tighten twine holder spring. This is the flat leaf type spring on the side. Turn bolt in 1/4 turn at a time until it will hold both strings. Also check twine tension at the twine box plastic is smaller and harder to hold. This should take care of your problem.

I would definitely use the sisal twine. If your knotters have rust on them clean them up with emory cloth. When storing the baler, coat the knotters with a film of grease, too. A little bit of rust can cause big headaches. Good luck!

I had the same problem with my new holland baler with plastic twine, i got mad and threw the s$%# away, and bought 9,000 sisal twine, it is a good heavy twine, i would try this before going and messing with the knotters, replace the plastic twine with the sisal.
