Any comments on the Howse Rought Cutting Mower?(Brushhog type sold by Northern Tool and Equipment) Any recommendations for type of mower for cutting light brush, keeping trails clear and cutting fields?

I have a 6' Howse I bought a little over 2 years ago. I mostly use it for pasture and ditch mowing, but I also occasionally use it down by the creek to clear brush. I have cut saplings 4' to 5' tall and cedars over 6' tall with no problem. I am quite happy with it. Hard to beat for the price. I paid $500 for mine new.

I've got a very old Howse 5-foot brush-hog that came with my even older tractor. It was severely abused before I got it, and I have to admit that I continue to do the same.

When I bought my farm, many of the old fields had been 'let go' for literally years, and it also has a lot of very steep slopes. So far, the old Howse has stood up to quite a bit of hard use with minimal maintenance. I replaced the stump-jumper once, and Howse was very good about figuring out which one would fit...they hadn't made mine in many years, but spent a couple of long-distance phone return calls to me to make sure they had the right one. Broke a u-joint on the PTO shaft, but that has been about it. I'm not sure they're 'the best' but I'd consider buying another.

good luck,
Tom
