I'm wanting to get a bushog for my MF135. A friend has an old 6 footer that's in good condition but it's real heavy with a big gear box. Is there a way to "size" a bushog for a tractor? I don't want to get one that's too big and tear my tractor up.

thanks.

Reed, I did a lot of research before deciding on a mower for my Ford 3600 diesel (34hp, 40hp PTO). All of the major manufacturers have specs. for their mowers and most have websites. You will have to research as I did and find a model that fits within the catagory of your Massy.

Once I figured out which mowers my 3600 would handle, I opted for the largest hp gearbox available. I figured more "beef" more life, and ended up with a 90hp gearbox.

Next I had to consider weight. Anything 900-1000 lbs was pushing the limit for my tractor without additional weight on the front end. My mower comes in at about 850lbs and is stable on uneven ground. Anything heavier and I would be pushing it.

I have to agree with Ultradog on the width of the mower. I wanted a 6 footer for the additional mowing capacity, but as he said, anything outside the rear tires and you won't be able to scoot between trees very well.

This is what I ended up with.

Medium duty
60" cutting width
90 hp gearbox
2" cutting capacity
10 gauge deck
1/4" side skirts
Weight 850lbs

All that reasearch paid off, I am well pleased with my purchase.

Good luck...

Most rotary/bushhog mowers are rated for the max HPof the tractor. I would be more concerned with getting a unit that was big enough for your HP rather than small enough. You see a lot of mowers in the 4, 5, and 6 foot sizes. Before I bought the 5' rotary for my 2N Ford I searched the archives on the N board and found that most people liked a mower that was the same width as the outside of their tires. That way if the tractor went between 2 obstacles the mower would too. Any smaller and you couldn't cut as close to things.
Another thing is how much your 3 pt. will lift
without your front wheels flapping in the breeze.
One thing to remember with ALL rotary mowers is it's extremely important to use an ORC to keep all that inertia from driving you into ditches, cars,
garages and trees.
