I have one Cole MX12 planter, and need some advice on seed plates. I got three plates and four speed gears with the planter, as I bought it unused from a man who bought it new in 1981. I am currently at work, and don't have the plates with me, but I will describe them:

Plate #1 - Appears to be a corn plate, with small "ledges". Plants field corn pretty well, but will not pick-up Silver Queen seeds!

Plate #2 - Has small notches, and plants okra and VERY small peas well. Too small for field peas, though.

Plate #3 - Sawtooth design with slots very close together. I have been told this was for cotton seed. I used this plate for sweet corn, but plants MUCH too thick, as 2 or 3 seeds drop every time. Plants larger field peas and green beans pretty well.

Here are my questions:
1. What plate does anyone use to plant Silver Queen corn? I am trying to avoid wasted seed and "hoe-ing hell" from thinning the crop.

2. Can manuals for this planter still be obtained? If so, where?

3. How do I know what speed gear to use? I am guessing right now. Surely, some engineer documented seed spacings with various plate/gear combos.

All help greatly appreciated!

Thanks to everyone who responded. I went to the website, and then called and asked. The Powell rep. was VERY helpful.

He said some folks plant S.Q. with the PDX-367 ("Med.-Flat") plate, but others use the PDX-566 ("Lrg.-Flat"). - Depends on who you talk to. He personally used the larger, as he said "I'd rather plant 2 seeds, than none..."

Plates are $22.00 + shipping. I'm gonna get the PDX-566 plate for my "late" corn, although with the drought we have here in Ga., I may be wasting my time & money.

Also, they have the manual for this planter in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format for free download at their website, which I think is GREAT!

Thanks again!
Tommy D.

All of the plates should have numbers stamped on them. When you talk to Powell, order the operators manual with all the seed plates listed if you don't already have it. The one that looks like a saw tooth works well with beans. They will have several plates available for corn, which they call "large", "medium", "small","extra small" and I believe in both "flat" and "round". The planter usually ships with the medium flat corn plate standard. If you are serious about planting corn with this you will probably need to obtain several plates as even the same variety will vary in seed size from different seed lots. I believe they are a little pricey ($20-25??). I would stick with the "flat" type corn plates. If yours is in fact a corn plate and won't pick up the Silver Queen you will have to purchase the next larger size. Good luck.

Look under the lid on the seed hopper and maybe you will luck out . Mine has plastic lids and has a chart that gives the various gear combinations and so forth .

If that fails , the other guys are right about getting info from Powell .

How much did you pay for yours ? Mine is one of the best looking one that I have seen . ( Not new , but very good ) . Sounds like you got a real creampuff ! I paid $ 295 at auction for mine . How bad did I get hurt ?

Good Luck !

Hey Ford Man!

I'd say you got a deal, as the website lists this planter for over $750!

I was lucky, though. My Father-in-law bought it years ago and never used it. Just sat in his shed, and he used a small push-type planter for his garden and never bothered to mount this one. He let me have it (free!) a year ago, and I mounted it on an old cultivator, and am just learning how to use it properly.

This year, since the corn plate didn't work, I used the bean plate for corn, and got it too thick! I *should* have thinned it a lot, but time got away from me and I didn't. Gonna leave it & see what happens. If ears of corn are a flop, atleast I have stalks for the mulch pile for next year!

Good Luck!

Give the customer support guys a call at Powell Manufacturing. 1-800-845-9087 They bought out Cole and still produce the plates and will be happy to talk to you about which plate is the best for what application. Most everyone I have ever talked to there is knowledgable and has actually used the planters.
