256 Hay Rake

My gear box is slipping some thought I would rebuild it, gears shafts OK but bearings are shot, I can not for the life of me get the bar ends off to get the carosel out of the way so I can get the gear box shaft out will I have to take all the bar nuts off to get it out of the way or is there something I am missing????? ??///

Andy, There are 4 bolts holding the bar disc to the spindle to the gearbox. Prop up the bars and remove these bolts. When they are out, the bars will move enough to get the nut off the gearbox shaft. Remember to replace the bearing on the top of the power shaft too. Put plenty of greese on it under the cap. I replaced the bearings in my 56 this spring. I think I spent about $30 fot parts. I do not know the answer, but avoid taking those rake bars off if you can find any other way to do it - assuming it's like my 55, those are _not_ fun to take out & put in....
