I need a new (used) baler. I know that John Deere and New Hollands are the balers of choice on this board but I can't find any decent used ones around here. There are however a couple of in-line Hesston balers in pretty good shape available right now. I would appreciate your opinions on these makes of balers.

The newer Hesston inlines are the same machine as Case IH inlines. I have friends that own one and they are happy with it.

They are a real good baler. Make excellent bales and if you bale legumes the leaves will be all the way through the flake unlike conventional square balers where leaves are condensed on one side of the flake. They are also easy to work one and if serviced regulary they will last a long time.

as i recall, since the hay is fed from the bottom, you can get fuller bales on the cut edge (bottom)of the bales causing a somewhat bananna shape. but new hollands can make banannas with their smaller balers like the 275, 273 , 268-9,and 310 also the "cut" side of the hesston bales is along the 18 inch side, not the 14 inch side as in other balers. (i think)

I have had a hesston 4500 baler since 1981, bale about 8-10000 bales per year. Very reliable baler, high capacity, easy to work on,have had very good luck. Same baler as my old oliver 620 until they went to the inline 4550,don't know anything about an inline.

I just bought a new 4550. Used it for the first time a couple of days ago. I've never used a JD or NH that compares with this Hesston. Amazing the speed you can go and still make same-length, brick-solid bales. The only thing I'd say about the used ones is make sure the chains are not worn and that they are at the correct tension. That's the only thing about my JD that I miss, the gear drives.

In my area Hesston balers have a good reputation. Of course, condition means a great deal, but I believe the most important consideration on any piece of machinery is the location and quality of the dealer. I have gotten rid of most of my Allis equipment because the nearest dealer is now over 150 miles away.
