I've been having trouble getting sweet corn to germinate well. While I'm not sure why I'm having trouble, it got me wondering about the function and use of a cultipacker. Would using a cultipacker be a typical step in planting corn?

Pete

try digging up the seed and see what it's doing. has it germinated? rotted or is it just sitting there? If it's germinated and not through the soil, it's probably too deep. If it's rotted it's too wet. If nothing it's probbly too dry or? soem times the problems gain be solved with a change in cultural practice rather than buying more equipment.

I believe that corn is sensitive to how deep it is planted. Possibly you are planting the seed too deep.

You'll find that a culti-packer is one of the most important implements you can own. On heavy ground like ours , quite often the culti-packer is used just before planting all crops and after seeding down hay fields. I have a JD 950 that was purchased in 1972 and has been used several times each year since with absolutely no maintenance other than shimming up the end wear on the packer wheels and replacing points on the teeth. Couldn't imagine farming without it.

Typically we used a cultipacker behind planting with a grain drill, oats, wheat, alfalfa, etc, to assure coverage of the seed. Father-in-law uses his cultipacker as a tillage tool to break up clods of dirt in his heavy clay based soils, prior to planting. Some of his clods are almost rock hard when they dry out. Never heard of using cultipacker behind a corn planter... Does your unit have packer wheels? They should be sufficient.
