I've been thinking about doing some of my own baling and being new at this was looking for a little help. I saw a Ford Model ii313 baler for sale and was wondering if anyone knows if my 25hp Ford 1710 would be adequate for running this baler? The balers is in real good shape. I have all flat ground to work.

Are you sure its not a FNH baler there numbers are 311, 316, and 320. The 311 is the smallest baler and it will be a pretty good load for tractor. Weight wise it will probably shove your tractor around on hills.

I am not familiar with that model of Ford baler and can not seem to find any recoed of that model. The model number is not typically the same as the series baler that it is known by. There should be a number like 250, 520, 530, 532 or 542 on the baler. Most of the Ford balers are made for smaller tractors. Most all of them can be run with 25 HP tractors but the difference may be the weight of the tractor. If you are using it in flat land then shaking you out of the seat would be the only issue I would see with that. If it is a 540 or 542 it may be a little heavy for that tractor but most of the other models should work OK if you take your time.

Thanks everyone for the input. I really appreciate the help. I clarified what model it was - it's a 530. I went over and ran it today. Seemed to work real well. Anybody have an oppinion as to the value? They're asking $750.

The 530 is what I have. Your tractor will bale fine on level ground. Where are you located because as we discussed a month or so ago Ford baler expertise seems to be very localized. $750 is a premium price for a Ford baler is some areas and absolutely ridiculous in others so that would help determine the pricing. If it being sold by a dealer then the price is probably what he would ask and you need to clarify the service and support level after the sell. Parts are readily available for these balers as many are still in service. Jeff F. that follows this board uses a 9N with a 530 pulling a wagon so the HP of your tractor shouldn't be an issue. Let us know what you decide and if I was you I would not offer more than $500 for the baler. Go back into the archives and find the thread and you will see a considerable amount of pros and cons about owning a Ford baler.

I agree with jerry on all points. I paid $600 at an auction for mine because the sheet metal on it was like new. I think it was still high but if it would have tied bales o.k. I would have been satisfied. I bought another for parts at an auction this year for $125. I think a working baler,(I strongly suggest you see it in operation, it will save you much grief), for a beginner is worth $750, but you should be able to buy it for less. I have been baling clover and timothy hay and so far I have not had any problems. I am getting much thicker hay this year and my 9N will be tested further but I don't expect any trouble. i ran the first cutting off in 2nd gear. If your ground is fairly flat, you can pull a wagon behind it too.

Matt,
Most of the specs on the newer balers I've seen call for at least 35 hp. The Ford baler you're looking at has to be an older baler so I'm unsure about 25 hp. I've seen some smaller tractors surprise me though. Take it slow, small windrows and maybe you could make dust fly right on baling hay. If you're not going to tie up a whole bunch of money in the baler and like you said, you've got flat ground, then I would say go for it and give it a try. I've seen 8N's run older New Holland balers and the 8N is rated at 26 hp.
Let's see what some others have to say.
