I know that this is an implement site but I need advice! My good friend traded in his cummins for a new one. His is a 98 Dodge 2500 SLT cummins 4x4. It is a 5 speed, Quad Cab with all extras except leather. It has 88k miles and also has nerf bars. The guy has $20,900 on it, but said that he would go to $18,500. Will I be getting ripped off? He got $18,000 trade in on it. Thanks!

I bought my 2001 2500 quad cab last October with Cummings and 4x4. It has everything but leather and power seats. It had 23000 miles on it. I did do a trade in but the contract said that the price for the truck was $26000. The sticker was in the glove box for $36795. I don't know if that is a good deal but I thought that it was a good deal. Just my 2 cents worth for comparison.

I'm not sure where you're located but here in North Florida that's a good price. When you figure the same truck brand new is about $38,000-$40,000 that $18,500 price tag seems reasonable. As for the 80K miles. That Cummins isn't even broke in yet! I have a 2001 RAM 3500 and have been very pleased. I've also owned a F350 w/Powerstroke. This was a good truck as well. The big difference I noticed was the 6 cylinder Cummins gets better fuel milage than the 8 cylinder Powerstroke. I average 23-25 mpg hauling 12,000lb load with the Cummins. The Powerstroke averaged about 18-20 mpg with the same load. Just my 2 cents.

Having spent 2 years in the car sales industry and almost 20 years now in vehicle finance I can tell you that Kelly Blue Book values are usually inflated. A more "real world" appraisal guide is N.A.D.A. which stands for National Automobile Dealers Association. When a dealer is making buy and sell decisions, it's the N.A.D.A. book he has in his hands. When he wants to put a price in the window, he uses a Kelley Blue Book price out sheet to show what a great deal you are getting. N.A.D.A. also has a website that you can use to get a value.

Interesting how a Cummins and a Quad cab will increase the value of a truck. I bought a '98 Dodge 2500 Laramie SLT with regular cab, 2 WD, cloth seats, automatic, pw, pl, cassette....basically a pretty well equipped "normal" truck for $8500. This was last fall. I like the truck a lot and didn't really care about the pricey options so I'm happy.

My friend is selling his '98 1500 base model no frills v6 5 speed. He's asking $5k which I think is reasonable. Extra options really jump the price in a hurry.
