Broken pulley on sickle mower

I have a McCormick International sickle mower that I bought last year. Don't know model # or year but found a patent tag showing early 60's. After cleaning and greasing I installed on my tractor to give it a trail run. I went about 10 ft. slowly to ensure nothing was binding up, then increased RPMs. As soon as I did this the pulley that operates the blades broke at the shaft. Has anybody else experianced this type of problem and what was the solution? I am in process of trying to find a new pulley but don't want to do this twice. Thanks in advance for any help ya'll can give.

I WAS WORKING IT WITH A BOLENS G212. I DON'T HAVE ANY PICTURES BUT THE IH DEALER SAID THAT THE PART NUMBER I FOUND CAST INTO THE PULLEY IS A GOOD # JUST NO LONGER AVAILIBLE. THE # IS 458944R1. THE MOWER IS A LITTLE MUCH FOR MY TRACTOR BUT I AM PLANNING ON GETTING LARGER MACHINE AS FUNDS PERMIT.

The mower is 100 series. Unfortunately the cause is probably simply poor quality of casting combined with metal failure. I have had two of
these mower pulleys break, for no apparent reason The second I was able to get welded ok so far [2years], the first ended up in bottom of pond when it broke off at operating speed and rolled. Anybody got scuba gear?

I appreciate your assistance. Would you happen to know a good place to find a new/used pulley? Would also like to find a manual for this cutter. I talked to the IH dealer here in Stephenville Tx and he told me the books show that the part number (458944R1) is a good # but part is no longer avalible,suprise.

Sounds like a bearing or bushing siezed up. The pulley that drives the pitman arm is on a shaft that runs into a case full of gear lube (or is supposed to be full of gear lube...).

I thought that at first but all parts are still moving. I would have thought that the key would have sheared first. Is it possible that the full 540 rpm on the pto is to fast? Lubrication was intact.

I use a different brand of mower, but;

That's an odd thing to break. Am I correct: This pulley runs a belt, and the pulley cracked out near the shaft? Or is the problem slightly different?

The belt should slip, or the pitman break, or - something. Were there signs of metal fatigue at the cracks, might be old cracks that finally let go?

I rarely operate my mower at full rpm, generally 1/2 engine speed. I'm not even sure what is 'recommended' for mowers, but seems to work best for me.

I would look at the national salvage yards to UPS you a good used unit. Not too heavy or large, and a lot cheaper than new from the factory, if you can even find such a thing. It's easy to see if a used one is in good shape or not, and frankly it's not really a high-wear item...
